SMART Cataract Surgery – Las Vegas Eye Doctor on Laser Cataract Removal and Improved Vision

Las Vegas, NV — Cataracts are an extraordinarily common vision condition – and one that can cause blindness if left untreated. Millions of Americans either already have cataracts, or are likely to develop them. They typically cause blurred, hazy, and/or cloudy vision, as well as light sensitivity, glare effects, and other debilitating symptoms that often become progressively worse. Dr. Helga F. Pizio, an eye doctor and cataract surgeon in Las Vegas, says cataract surgery in the last century was primarily a way to prevent blindness. However, she notes, an array of advances over the years has given way to effective new treatments and ways to improve patients’ vision after cataract surgery. “Unlike some patients in the past who had conditions such as astigmatism and presbyopia and were resigned to wearing glasses full-time, there are now advanced technologies to correct refractive conditions. These technologies allow our patients to see at distances both far and near without having to wear glasses.”

One of the advanced technologies Dr. Pizio is talking about is called SMART Cataract Surgery. Available at New Eyes, Dr. Pizio’s ophthalmology practice in Las Vegas, SMART Cataract Surgery involves the use of laser technology for a number of steps that used to require handheld instruments or surgical blades. During cataract surgery, the cataract is often removed along with the eye’s natural lens, which is then replaced with an intraocular lens implant (IOL). Dr. Pizio says SMART Cataract Surgery can enhance the precision of the treatment, as well as the chances for the lens implant to provide good vision at a range of distances after the procedure. “In SMART Cataract Surgery, incisions are made by the femtosecond laser. This technology has revolutionized our ability to: accurately make cataract surgery incisions; place the lens implant perfectly; and correct astigmatism on the surface of the eye.”

Dr. Pizio says SMART Cataract Surgery’s use of the LenSx® Femtosecond Laser system to remove the cataract, followed by Optiwave Refractive Analysis (ORA), has proven to have very successful outcomes for many patients at her practice. “After the cataract is removed and astigmatism reduced using the femtosecond laser, the scanning ORA laser can take multiple measurements with a clear view to allow the New Eyes surgeon to tailor the power and position of the IOL and give our patients the sharpest visual outcomes possible.”

While Dr. Pizio says the need for refractive enhancements after SMART Cataract Surgery is very uncommon at New Eyes, she notes that the few patients who do not respond as predicted can often have their vision improved with a LASIK laser vision correction procedure. Plus, she says, in some cases, patients may not desire a treatment to improve a refractive condition during cataract surgery, or even have a condition that requires it. However, Dr. Pizio says: “For those patients who have cataracts and would like to avoid being married to glasses or contact lenses, we have excellent options.”
