How Long is Recovery from Cataract Surgery?

sungalsses-couple-walkingIt may surprise you to know that recovery from cataract surgery is typically not a very long process. The skills and experience of our cataract surgeons combined with the use of state-of-the-art laser cataract surgery techniques often lead to a relatively uneventful recovery process and a quick return to daily routines.

Most cataract surgery patients are able to resume normal activities in the days following surgery. In fact, many individuals are able to start getting back to their regular activities after about 24 hours. Once the procedure is complete, you will be given medicinal eye drops that are typically necessary for about three to four weeks after surgery. These eye drops are very important in the healing process. For the first week, a protective eye shield is often recommended to wear while sleeping in order to decrease the chances of inadvertently rubbing or touching your eye. You should also not swim or use eye makeup for at least one week after surgery. Furthermore, be sure to avoid any activities that could heighten the risk of eye injury.

Some irriitation of the eye, fluctuation in vision and a little blurriness can be expected during the initial healing process; however, if you are experiencing a sharp decrease in vision that gets worse, or if you feel you may be suffering from some other kind of cataract surgery complication, please contact us as quickly as possible. With that in mind, please note that our cataract team takes extraordinary precautions to minimize risks, and the safety and success of your procedure are our top priorities.
