How can Astigmatism be Corrected with Cataract Surgery?

woman-clear-visionIn our last blog post, we talked about how you can recognize the symptoms of astigmatism and the many treatment options that can correct that common condition. Some of the ways astigmatism can be treated include an advanced technique called Limbal Relaxing Incisions (LRI), laser vision correction, or toric intraocular lenses – all of which can be performed for patients who have cataracts in addition to astigmatism.

In the past, patients who had cataracts removed would still need to wear glasses or contacts following their treatment to compensate for blurry vision caused by a pre-existing astigmatism. Fortunately,  today there are great options that can address astigmatism during cataract surgery which can reduce or eliminate the need for corrective eyewear.

At the time of the cataract operation, astigmatism can be reduced using a technique called LRI (Limbal Relaxing Incisions). LRI’s are very precise small incisions made on the surface of the eye called the cornea. This technique changes the cornea from an oval shape into a more spherical form, which can improve the way light rays are focused on the retina. LRI’s can be performed manually with a blade. However, at New Eyes, our surgeons Helga F. Pizio, MD and Ksenia Stafeeeva, MD utilize the more accurate LenSx® femtosecond laser technology to perform LRI treatment. This advanced laser technique offers incredibly precise astigmatism correction for many cataract patients.

Intraocular lenses (IOL), which replace the eye’s natural lens once cataracts have been removed, can also be very effective at correcting astigmatism. The Toric IOL is an oval shaped lens that can reduce or eliminate astigmatism permanently after cataract surgery. Toric IOL’s often serve as an ideal option for cataract patients.

Some individuals can also benefit from LASIK or PRK laser vision correction following cataract surgery – two procedures that have proven again and again their ability to help patients see clearly without heavy reliance on glasses and contacts. During your initial eye evaluation and consultation, our experienced New Eyes surgeons Dr Pizio and Dr Stafeeva will talk with you about your options and determine which will be best for your needs and goals.
